Diving Into Something Real

Maya's vintage bucket hat became her armor that summer, a way to hide without actually disappearing. When Lucas invited her to his pool party, she almost said no—almost.

The party was everything she'd dreaded and hoped for. Kids from school she barely knew, swimsuit-clad and confident, while she stood by the edge in her oversized hat, feeling like a character who'd wandered into the wrong movie. That is, until Lucas materialized beside her.

"Hey," he said, water dripping from his hair like he'd just emerged from some aquatic kingdom. "You gonna swim, or just guard that hat like it's the crown jewels?"

"Maybe I'm the lifeguard," she shot back, surprising herself with the sass.

Lucas laughed—actually laughed—and somehow she was in the pool, chlorine stinging her eyes, splashing water at Lucas while her hat floated away like a abandoned ship. She didn't even care.

Later, they sat on the patio under swaying palms, shoulders brushing, conversation flowing easier than she'd ever experienced. Lucas traced the lines in her palm, pretending to read her future like those girls at school who'd discovered tarot cards.

"You're gonna do something big," he said, fingers still pressed against her skin. "I can tell."

"Yeah? Like what?"

"Dunno. But you're not gonna stay in the shallow end forever."

That's when she knew—hat or no hat, palm reading or not—she was already swimming toward something real, something scary and wonderful and completely worth diving into.
