Diving In

hatiphonepadelpool

The baseball cap was pulled low, my brother's old Padres hat swallowed my forehead like it was trying to hide me entirely. Good. That was the point.

I stood at the edge of the pool party, phone clutched in my sweating palm like it was a lifeline. Instagram stories were already flooding in—everyone looked perfect, glowing, effortless. Meanwhile, I'd spent forty minutes deciding between this oversized hat and staying home.

"Yo, Maya!"

Jake. The guy I'd had a crush on since seventh grade was motioning me over to the padel court. His hair was wet, shoulders glistening. My stomach did that thing where it forgot how to be an organ.

"Wanna play? We need a fourth."

The hat suddenly felt ridiculous. I was hiding behind a piece of fabric while everyone else was just... living. I glanced at my iPhone—notifications stacked up, but none of them mattered as much as this moment.

"Yeah," I heard myself say. "But I'm terrible."

Jake laughed. "Same. We'll be terrible together."

Something shifted. The hat stayed on, but I stepped onto the court, racquet awkward in my hand. We missed every shot. We made fun of each other's form. The popular kids watched from the pool, but for once, I didn't care what they thought.

Later, when Jake cannonballed into the deep end, he grabbed my hat from the pool deck and put it on his own head, dripping wet.

"This is actually a look," he said, grinning.

I laughed—really laughed, the kind that starts in your chest and doesn't stop.

The phone stayed in my bag the rest of the afternoon. Some moments are too real to filter.
