Diving Deep Into DMs
Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her phone like a lifeline. The pixelated glow illuminated her nervous expression—she'd been staring at Jordan's DM for twenty minutes.
"You coming in or what?" Jordan called from the water, droplets cascading down his abs. He flipped his baseball hat backward, that effortless move that made everyone's stomach do somersaults.
Maya's fingers hovered over the screen. Just days ago, she'd crafted the perfect response: casual but interested, funny but not trying too hard. Now, facing him IRL, the typed words felt like ancient history.
"Yeah, just... one sec," she managed, voice cracking slightly. Smooth, Maya. So smooth.
Her iphone slipped from her sweaty palm.
Time moved in agonizing slow motion. The phone hit the water with an unceremonious splash, sinking instantly toward the deep end. Maya's face burned hotter than July asphalt.
Jordan was already swimming toward her. "You good?"
"My phone," she groaned. "RIP to my dignity and my electronics."
He dove under, surfacing seconds later with the dripping device. "Pretty sure I just saved your life from social suicide." He placed it gently on the poolside table, then extended a hand. "Come on. The water's perfect, and you can't worry about your notifications when you're underwater."
Maya hesitated, then grabbed his hand and pulled herself in. The cool water shocked her system, washing away the anxiety. She floated on her back, watching palm fronds sway against the twilight sky.
"So," Jordan said, treading water beside her. "About that DM..."
Maya's stomach flipped. "You read it?"
"Every word." He grinned. "Was kinda hoping for a real-life response though."
They laughed together as the pool lights flickered on, golden ripples dancing around them. Maybe, Maya thought, some things really were better IRL than on a screen—even if it required a little drowning first.
