Digital Storm
Maya sat by the hotel pool, her iPhone illuminating her face in the gathering dusk. She'd been following him for three weeks—her husband's business partner, the man who'd promised to double their investments. Now she was the spy in her own marriage, piecing together encrypted messages and offshore accounts.
A sudden flash of lightning streaked across the darkening sky, reflecting in the water beside her. Another notification appeared. She'd used the palm scanner he trusted her with, the one she'd told him was for emergency access only. Now it revealed everything: the money was gone. Not lost—stolen. And not by a stranger.
The pool's surface rippled in the wind. Marcus was arriving any minute for their anniversary dinner, unaware that she knew. She'd spent the day building her case, collecting screenshots, tracing the money's path to a Cayman account in his mistress's name. The same woman who'd smiled at them at Christmas dinner.
Her hands trembled as she transferred the evidence to a secure drive. Another lightning strike, closer now. The first raindrops began to fall, darkening the concrete around her. She should feel righteous. vindicated. Instead, she felt hollow—a decade of trust dissolving like sugar in warm water.
The sliding glass door opened behind her. Marcus stepped onto the patio, holding two champagne glasses. "Storm's coming in fast," he said, his voice warm and familiar. "Everything okay?"
She studied his face. The laugh lines she'd adored, now possibly part of the performance. He'd lied to her every morning over coffee, every evening in their bed. And she'd sat here, pretending nothing was wrong, gathering evidence like some professional witness to her own destruction.
"Maya?" He set the glasses down on the table, concern creasing his forehead.
She stood up slowly, iPhone heavy in her hand. The rain began in earnest now, warm and relentless. She knew what she had to do. But knowing and doing were oceans apart.
"No," she said softly. "Everything's not okay."
The thunder rolled overhead as she began to speak, each word a new lightning strike across the space between them.
