Digital Riddle at Sunset Beach
Maya lay on her beach towel, iPhone glowing against the summer sunset as she scrolled through Skylar's profile for the hundredth time. The new girl at school was like a human sphinx—beautiful but utterly unreadable. Every caption was a riddle, every photo perfectly curated.
"You're literally spying on her again," said Kai, flopping onto the sand beside her. His vitamin water splashed onto her leg. "Sorry, but for real though, you've been obsessed since freshman orientation."
Maya locked her screen. "I'm not obsessed. I'm just... curious. Nobody's actually that perfect."
"Maybe she's just chill." Kai took a sip of his drink. "Not everyone has a hidden agenda like you think."
But that night, Maya couldn't sleep. She grabbed her iPhone and started really looking. Not at the photos, but at the details. The vitamin supplements on her bathroom counter. The water polo trophy from three schools ago. The way her eyes always looked slightly sad in every group shot.
Then she found it: a private account with zero posts, one follower—Skylar's finsta. The bio read: "sphinx riddles: solve me."
Maya's heart raced. This wasn't just stalking anymore. This was an invitation.
The next day at the pool, Maya sat beside Skylar during lunch break.
"Your finsta," Maya said quietly. "The sphinx thing."
Skylar's head snapped up. For the first time, her perfect mask slipped.
"You found it." Skylar studied her, surprised. "Nobody ever notices. They just see the curated version."
"I notice things." Maya dropped her voice lower. "Like how you're always drinking that nasty vitamin water even though you hate it, but you post about wellness anyway. Like how you're the best swimmer but never join the team."
Skylar's lips curled into something real—not a smile, but close. "Maybe I've been waiting for someone to actually see me instead of just watching."
The water lapped at the pool's edge as other students laughed and splashed around them. But in that moment, Maya understood something bigger than any crush: real connection isn't about perfectly curated feeds or hidden agendas. It's about someone brave enough to let their sphinx guard down and let you in.
"So," Skylar said, pushing her sunglasses up. "You gonna solve the rest of the riddles, or what?"
Maya grinned. "Challenge accepted."
