Digital Ghost Hunter

foxpapayazombiepalmiphone

Maya's palms were sweating through her denim shorts as she gripped her dad's old **iPhone**, the one he'd given her before moving across the country. Three notifications lit up the screen simultaneously: snaps from her old friends, living their best lives without her.

"You look like a **zombie**," said Kai, dropping onto the bench beside her. His buzzcut was fresh, still revealing the tan line from his previous hairstyle. "Seriously, you've been doomscrolling since lunch."

Maya locked the phone and shoved it in her pocket. "Not everyone can be naturally chill like you, Kai."

He laughed, pulling something from his backpack. "Try this. My mom's obsessed with Hawaiian fruit now." He handed her a slice of **papaya**.

Maya eyed it suspiciously. The texture was weird—soft and orange, like nothing she'd ever eaten. She took a tentative bite. "Wait, this is actually... lowkey fire?"

"Right?!" Kai leaned back against the **palm** tree behind them. "So, there's this party tonight. At Harper's. You should come."

Before Maya could answer, movement caught her eye. A sleek red **fox** emerged from the bushes, its coat impossibly bright against the school's worn asphalt. It paused, watching them with intelligent eyes.

"No way," Maya whispered. "Is that real?"

The fox tilted its head, then darted across the courtyard and disappeared.

"That was random," Kai said. "So, about Harper's..."

Maya looked at her phone again, then at the spot where the fox had vanished. Something about the encounter—how unexpected and rare it was—made something click. She'd been waiting for her old life to come back, haunting her notifications like a digital ghost. But new things were happening right here.

"Yeah," she said, unlocking her phone and opening a new contact. "I'll come. But you're introducing me to everyone."

"Deal." Kai grinned. "And I'll bring more papaya."

"Don't push it." But Maya was already smiling, her palms finally dry.
