Desert Bloom
The pool at the Luxor Resort was empty at 6 AM, the water still and opaque as milk. Elena floated on her back, staring up at the hotel's massive black pyramid rising against the pale Egyptian dawn. Somewhere in that architectural monstrosity, Mark was probably sleeping, the man who'd sold her on this "life-changing opportunity" six months ago.
"You're thinking like an employee, not a business owner," he'd told her over dinner in Cleveland, his teeth too white, his eyes never quite meeting hers. Now she understood what that meant: think like someone willing to exploit your friends.
She'd put twelve thousand dollars into Wellness Dynamics. The real product wasn't the supplements or the detox teas—it was the dream itself, sold in installments. Last week she'd convinced her old college roommate to join, watching Janelle's face light up with the same hope Elena had felt, that same desperate belief that this time, finally, she'd found the way out.
The betting pool among the senior distributors said Janelle would last three months. Elena had put five hundred on six.
"Mind if I join?"
Elena treaded water as a woman in her fifties lowered herself into the pool, moving with careful precision. She'd seen Sandra at the leadership conference—diamond rank, apparently pulling in thirty grand a month.
"Early start," Sandra said, floating beside her. "I was up all night. My daughter called from college. She needs money for textbooks." She laughed, a dry humorless sound. "I'm a Diamond, Elena. I should be able to buy her a library. Instead I'm calculating whether I can afford organic spinach or the regular kind."
The water felt suddenly cold.
"What do you tell her?" Elena asked.
"That I'm proud of her. That her mother's building an empire." Sandra's voice cracked. "What do I tell myself?"
They watched the sunrise paint the pyramid in gold and shadows, both of them floating in this artificial oasis, thousands of miles from the people they were slowly learning to exploit.
"I'm going home," Elena said. The words surprised her. "Today."
Sandra turned to her, and for the first time, Elena saw something like relief in her eyes. "Take me with you?"
They climbed out of the pool, dripping and shivering in the desert morning, two women finally waking up from a very expensive dream.
