Deep End Blues

spypyramidswimming

Elena floated on her back in the hotel pool at midnight, the chlorine smell sharp enough to cut through the gin still lingering on her tongue. The swimming had become her ritual—fifty laps every night she spent in whatever city her current assignment demanded. Tonight, Cairo.

She was tired. Not the kind that sleep fixed, but the deep-bone weariness of ten years as a corporate spy, gathering secrets on pharmaceutical mergers that would make millionaires into billionaires while regular people died because they couldn't afford insulin. Her handler called it "competitive intelligence." She called it selling pieces of her soul.

Tomorrow she'd infiltrate the headquarters of Apex Wellness, a supplement company built like a pyramid scheme, selling false hope to desperate people. Her job: steal their customer list before their IPO. The money was excellent. The moral calculus was getting harder to justify.

Elena opened her eyes and stared up at the black sky. From this angle, she could just make out the Great Pyramid in the distance, a silent triangle against the stars. Something about its endurance made her chest ache. That structure had stood for forty-five centuries. What would remain of her work? Stolen data, betrayed confidences, a trail of professional destruction.

She thought about Omar, the target from last year's job in Dubai. They'd spent three weeks together—dinners, shared laughter, the genuine intimacy of two lonely people. Then she'd copied his hard drive while he slept. He'd found out. His last email had just been a question mark.

The water lapped against her ears, drowning out the world. She wondered what would happen if she just kept swimming, down toward the bottom, let the silence take her. Not death, necessarily—but something like it. A different life.

Her phone buzzed on the poolside chair. A message from her handler: "Confirmation needed. Apex green light?"

Elena treaded water, watching the screen light up and fade. Somewhere beyond the hotel walls, the ancient pyramid kept its secrets. Somewhere in the water, her reflection watched back.

She swam to the edge, pulled herself out, and did not reply.
