Dead Zones & Dog Paddles
I slipped my phone into the waterproof pouch and smoothed my hair, already regretting agreeing to come to Jordan's pool party. The invite had said "bring swimsuits and good vibes only" but honestly, my social battery was at like 3% before I even walked through the gate.
The pool was already packed with people from school, and I spotted Jason from my AP History class floating on an inflatable pizza slice. I'd been lowkey crushing on him since spring semester, but obviously I hadn't made a move because that would require actual courage.
"Yo, Maya!" Jordan called from the deep end. "Your dog's trying to drink the pool water again!"
Cooper, Maya's golden retriever, was indeed doing his absolute best to consume half the pool while everyone laughed. He wasliving his best life, no social anxiety whatsoever, and honestly? Goals.
I waded into the shallow end, doing that awkward thing where you're technically swimming but also trying not to look like you're drowning. Across the pool, Jason waved and my stomach did that embarrassing little flip thing.
"Hey!" he shouted, swimming over. "What's up?"
"Not much," I said, trying to act chill. "Just vibing."
We talked for a bit, and I was actually feeling okay until Cooper came charging through like a furry torpedo, sending a wave of pool water directly into my face. I came up spluttering while Jason laughed (but like, in a cute way?).
But then chaos happened. Cooper shook himself off right next to the outdoor TV setup, and the massive tangled cable connecting the speakers and TV system went flying into the pool.
Dead silence.
Jordan's dad rushed over, fishing the cable out of the water. "Well, there goes the music," he said, but he was smiling.
"My bad," Maya said, grabbing Cooper's collar.
"It's cool," Jordan said. "We can just hang out." And somehow, without the playlist blasting, the conversation got actually real. We ended up sitting on the pool edge, legs in the water, talking about everything from college applications to how weird it is that our parents still pay for cable when we all just stream everything anyway.
Jason sat next to me, our shoulders touching, and I realized that sometimes the best moments happen when everything goes "wrong." Cooper's chaos had actually broken the ice better than any playlist could.
"Hey," Jason said quietly, when everyone else was distracted by Cooper chasing a butterfly. "You want to maybe get food sometime? Like, not at a pool party?"
I felt myself grinning like an idiot. "Yeah. I'd like that."
Cooper chose that moment to shake off directly over us, but honestly? I didn't even care. Some things are worth getting wet for.
