Dead Wired
Maya felt like a zombie. Like, actual brain-eating, shuffling undead zombie. Three weeks of staying up until 3 AM grinding ranked matches would do that to a person. Her mom called it "gaming addiction," Maya called it "preparing for the esports team."The cable situation wasn't helping. Her room was a disaster of tangled charging cords—phone, laptop, Nintendo Switch, tablet—all snaking across the floor like a technological hydra. Every morning she'd trip over at least three of them."You need cable management, Maya," her little brother Tyler had said, using that annoying superior tone only thirteen-year-old brothers could pull off.She ignored Tyler because her mind was on something far more pressing. Tomorrow was Picture Day. Freshman year Picture Day. The photos would live in the yearbook FOREVER. And her hair. Oh god, her hair. Maya had decided to dye it "subtle lavender highlights" last night at 11 PM because obviously that was a rational decision. Instead, she'd ended up with this weird patchy situation that looked like a grape soda explosion. Some parts were purple-ish. Some parts were still her natural brown. Social death was imminent. She could already see the group chat. The lols. The reaction GIFs.The next morning at school, Sofia found her in the bathroom, attempting to salvage the situation with a messy bun."Your hair looks sick actually," Sofia said, and Maya couldn't tell if she was being sarcastic. Sofia was gorgeous—perfect curls, flawless skin, always had it together."I hate it," Maya said. "I look like a zombie that got caught in a highlighter accident."Sofia laughed, genuinely laughed. "Dude, last week I accidentally cut my bangs too short and looked like a five-year-old for three days. We've all been there."Maya relaxed. Sofia wasn't judging. Sofia was, like, a real person who also messed up sometimes."Your setup is actually so cool though," Sofia added. "I saw your stream last week. Your aim is insane."Maya blinked. Sofia watched her streams?"I mean, I'm still in gold," Maya said, trying to play it cool."So? I'm stuck in silver. My aim is trash." Sofia pulled out her phone. "We should duo sometime. My cable management is non-existent though, fair warning."Maya felt something shift. A thing moment. An opening."I can help with that," she said. "I have, like, eight velcro ties from when I tried to fix mine."Sofia grinned. "It's a date. Gaming partner AND cable consultant? You're a lifesaver."That night, Maya lay in bed, hair still imperfect but somehow fine now. She wasn't a zombie anymore. Just tired. But like, in a good way. A way that meant she'd made a friend. A real one. She drifted off thinking: sometimes the glitches in the system turn out to be the best part of the game.
