Dead Tired on the Court
Maya dragged herself through the school hallway feeling like a total zombie. Three consecutive nights of gaming until 3 AM will do that to you. Her chemistry test loomed, but her brain was running on pure caffeine and regret.
"You look like death, Maya," joked her best friend Chloe, who annoyingly looked fresh as a daisy despite having the same exam. "Still coming to the padel courts after school?"
"Yeah," Maya managed, though the thought of running around a court after a ball sounded like torture. But her crush, Ryan, had joined the new padel club, and apparently her zombie self was still pathetic enough to show up and hope he noticed her existence.
The sport was weirdly addictive—like tennis but enclosed, with walls you could bounce off. Her first time playing last week, she'd tripped over her own feet and accidentally smashed the ball into her own face. Humiliation level: maximum. Ryan had laughed, but like, nicely. She thought.
After school, the courts were packed. Maya grabbed a racket, her hands sweating. This was it—her chance to finally talk to him without sounding like a complete buffoon.
"Hey Maya!" Ryan waved from across the court. "Wanna partner up?"
Her heart did that thing where it forgets how to beat properly. "Sure!" she squeaked. Smooth. Real smooth.
They played, and for the first time all day, her brain actually woke up. Something about the game—the strategy, the quick reactions—made her feel alive again. They were evenly matched, trading points and jokes. She even managed to hit a winner off the back wall.
"Not bad for a zombie," Ryan grinned as they sat on the bench, catching their breath.
Maya laughed. "I think I'm coming back to life."
"Good," he said, looking at her with that intense expression that made her stomach flip-flop. "Because I was going to ask—you want to grab bubble tea after?"
The sphinx in Maya's mind finally had its answer: sleep deprivation was terrible, but sometimes, the best things happen when you're too tired to overthink everything.
"Absolutely," she said. "But I'm ordering the biggest size they have."
