Dead Tired at the Deep End
I felt like a legit zombie walking into Tyler's pool party. Mom had me on this new vitamin regimen that made me tired, weird, and kinda glow-in-the-dark-ish under fluorescent lights. Not the vibe I wanted for the first party of summer.
The pool deck was packed. Everyone from school was there, scattered around like some social pyramid scheme I hadn't been invited to join. The baseball players had claimed the prime spots—Tyler, McKenzie, the whole crew. My ex-best-friend-slash-massive-crush sat among them, laughing at something that definitely wasn't funny.
'There he is!' Tyler yelled, pointing at me. 'Zombie boy!'
Everyone laughed. I froze. My face burned. This was it—the moment I'd been dreading all summer.
'Nice vitamins, man,' McKenzie added, smirking. 'You look... healthy.'
More laughter. I stood there, halfway between the pool gate and the snacks table, feeling smaller than I'd ever felt in my life.
Then something snapped. Maybe it was the summer heat. Maybe it was the exhaustion from being the kid whose mom made him carry a vitamin case to parties. Or maybe I was just done caring about the high school hierarchy like it actually mattered.
'Actually,' I said, voice steadier than I felt, 'they're working great. I've got enough energy to do this.'
I walked straight toward the pool, shoes still on, sunglasses still covering my eyes.
'No way,' someone whispered.
I cannonballed right into the deep end, fully clothed, sending water everywhere. Including all over the baseball team's carefully arranged dry spots.
Silence for exactly two seconds.
Then McKenzie started cracking up. Tyler followed. My crush—what was her name again?—was smiling. Actually smiling.
'Okay,' Tyler said. 'That was legendary.'
I floated there, soaked and ridiculous, feeling something I hadn't felt in months. Not cool. Not popular. Just myself. And honestly? That was way better.
Later, dripping by the snack table, I caught my crush's eye. She mouthed 'nice splash' and winked.
Maybe summer wasn't going to be so bad after all.
