Dead Men Walking

zombiewaterpool

The hotel pool shimmered like liquid mercury under the desert sun. Elena sat on the deck chair, her fourth club soda sweating onto the plastic table, watching the ripples distort the reflection of conference attendees who'd escaped their sessions.

'You look like you're plotting murder,' a voice said.

She turned. Marcus from accounting stood there, tie loosened, holding two waters. 'Actually, I'm calculating how many years I've been a corporate zombie. The answer is twelve. Since the merger.'

Marcus laughed, dry and humorless. 'Only twelve? I've been dead inside since 2019.' He offered her the extra water. Their fingers brushed. Something electric.

They'd been dancing around each other for months—stolen glances in the breakroom, lingering goodbyes at the elevator, emails that started professional and grew personal. Now, surrounded by splashing executives and the smell of chlorine and desperation, something shifted.

'The betting pool says we're sleeping together,' Elena said, suddenly bold.

Marcus raised an eyebrow. 'Does it say I'm in love with you?'

The words hung in the humid air, heavier than the water-saturated atmosphere. Elena's chest tightened.

'No,' she whispered. 'It didn't mention that.'

'The pool's wrong sometimes.' He sat beside her. 'I quit today. Twelve years of being a zombie, and I'm done.'

'What will you do?'

'Live,' he said. 'Maybe with someone who makes me feel alive.' He looked at her with naked hope. 'The question is whether the zombie next to me wants to be human again.'

Elena watched the water ripple in the pool. She could stay—safe, dead, predictable. Or she could choose something terrifying and real.

She took his hand. 'I'm terrified.'

'Me too,' Marcus said. 'But at least we'll feel something.'

The conference continued without them. The dead didn't notice two survivors walking away from the pool together.
