Dead Man Walking

Marcus had been stealing biotech secrets from Veridian Dynamics for six months, and the strain was turning him into something that shuffled through meetings with glassy eyes and a numb heart. A corporate zombie in a bespoke suit.

He stood by the water cooler, watching the condensation weep down the plastic bottle like the last of his conscience. Sarah approached—senior researcher, brilliant, and increasingly suspicious of his 'consultant work' in their secure labs.

"You look like death, Marcus," she said, filling her cup. Her fingers brushed his, electric and dangerous. "Water under the bridge, or are you drowning?"

He should have walked away. A spy doesn't get sentimental. But Sarah had become the anchor in his ocean of lies. Last month, when his handler had demanded proprietary sequences under a deadline, Marcus had found himself at her apartment door, whiskey on his breath, confessing nothing and everything.

They'd ended up in her shower, fully clothed, hot water cascading as she pressed him against the tile. "You're not built for this life," she'd whispered, reading him perfectly. "Whatever you're running from—" Her lips on his neck, cutting off his truth. "—you can't outrun yourself."

Now, by the water cooler, her knowing gaze stripped him bare. She knew. She'd always known.

"They're launching Project Lazarus next week," she said, referring to the breakthrough he'd been paid to steal. "The resurrection stuff. But some things should stay dead, Marcus. Some choices."

The water cooler hummed its monotonous song. In the reflection, Marcus saw the man he'd become—a walking corpse of ambition and betrayal.

He chose. Not Veridian. Not his handlers. Not the paycheck.

"I'm done," Marcus said, dropping his badge in her palm. "Burn it all."

Sarah smiled, and for the first time in months, Marcus felt his heart begin to beat again. Behind them, water continued its endless cycle—purification, rebirth, the only resurrection that mattered.
