Dead Love Walking

zombiespyfriend

Marcus stared at his phone, the message from David glowing on the screen: 'She's not who you think she is.' His best friend of twenty years, the man who'd stood beside him at his wedding, was now telling him that Julia—his wife of seven years—was living a double life.

Three months ago, Marcus had confessed to David that his marriage felt like a zombie relationship: dead on its feet, still moving but without pulse. Julia worked late at her tech consultancy job, came home exhausted, and spent weekends glued to her laptop. He'd tried everything: couples therapy, romantic weekends, even that disastrous cooking class they'd walked out of halfway through.

Now Marcus understood why.

The investigator David had hired had uncovered the truth. Julia wasn't a tech consultant. She was a corporate spy, hired by Marcus's company's biggest competitor to infiltrate his department. Every late night, every business trip, every "emergency conference call"—all carefully constructed lies.

The worst part? She'd been sleeping with Marcus for intelligence.

He sat in their kitchen, a half-empty bottle of wine between them, watching Julia scroll through her phone. She looked up and caught his eye, smiling that familiar, soft smile that had once made his chest ache.

"You're leaving," she said. It wasn't a question.

"David told you?"

"No one had to tell me. I've been waiting for you to figure it out." She set down her phone. "I didn't mean to hurt you, Marcus."

"You spied on me. You slept with me for trade secrets."

"I fell in love with you." She reached across the table. "That wasn't part of the job."

Marcus pulled away. "So what? I'm supposed to be grateful? Our entire marriage is a lie."

"It's real now."

"No." Marcus stood up. "A zombie isn't alive just because it's moving. You killed us the moment you started working for them."

He walked out with nothing but his phone, his wallet, and the crushing realization that David—his actual friend—had been the only person brave enough to tell him the truth.

The next morning, Marcus called the FBI. Then he called David. They met at a bar, ordered whiskey, and sat in silence until David finally asked: "You want to talk about it?"

Marcus shook his head. "Some friends spy on you for love. Others spy on you for truth. I'm learning which one matters more."
