Dead in the Water

The hotel pool was empty at 2 AM, which was exactly what Elena needed. She'd left her phone in the room, finally cutting the cable that tethered her to the office, the expectations, the endless Slack notifications that made her feel like less than human and more like a zombie moving through someone else's life.

Forty-two years old and she was drowning in the success she'd spent two decades chasing. The senior vice president position, the corner office, the six-figure salary — it was all bull, really. Just shiny objects to distract her from the fact that she hadn't felt alive since before grad school.

She slipped into the water fully clothed. The silk blouse was probably ruined, but that seemed fitting somehow. The cold shocked her system awake. This was real. This sharp clarity, this momentary suspension between breath and water, this was more honest than anything she'd done in years.

Her mother had called it quits at 39, walking away from partnership at the firm to open a bookstore that barely broke even. Elena had judged her then, thought she was throwing away her potential. Now she understood. Some success was just a gilded cage.

She floated on her back, staring up at the indigo sky, and realized she could quit tomorrow. The world wouldn't end. The firm would survive. She might even, eventually, remember who she was before she became what everyone wanted her to be.

The water held her like a second chance.
