Dead in the Water

The conference room was full of them—the corporate zombie horde, hollowed out by quarterly targets and fluorescent lights. Marcus watched them shuffle toward the buffet, mindless in their pressed suits, while he maintained his cover as the new senior analyst from the Chicago branch.

The spy game wasn't what he'd expected when he'd taken the job. No exotic locales, no femme fatales—just a failing corporation determined to bury evidence of their environmental violations before the IPO. Six months of gathering intel, and Marcus was beginning to feel like one of them. The numbness had started somewhere around month three, settling in his chest like cold water.

Now they were at the "team building" retreat—a luxury resort in Sedona with an infinity pool that seemed to spill into the desert. Marcus found himself there at midnight, unable to sleep, when Elena appeared.

She was the CEO's executive assistant, the one person he'd been warned about. "Can't sleep either?" she asked, sliding into the pool beside him. The water was warm, silken against his skin.

"Insomnia comes with the territory," he said, swimming lazily in the deep end. "You?"

She moved closer, her fingers brushing his arm underwater. "I know why you're really here, Marcus."

His heart stopped. "I don't know what you mean."

"The corporate espionage. The Chicago branch doesn't exist." Her voice was almost tender. "I'm not going to turn you in."

"Why not?"

"Because I'm tired too." She rested her head against his shoulder, and for the first time in six months, Marcus felt something other than numbness. "We're all just zombies, Marcus. Some of us are just better at pretending otherwise."

They stayed like that until dawn, two spies who'd forgotten what they were fighting for, swimming in circles in a pool that led nowhere, while the water held them both like a secret they'd finally let themselves keep.
