Dead Drops on the Padel Court

Elena hadn't felt alive in three years. Her job as a corporate spy had reduced her to something functionally undead—a zombie in a designer suit, extracting secrets through cable taps and keyloggers, bearing witness to the worst of humanity while her own soul atrophied.

Then came the assignment: infiltrate Marcus's telecommunications firm. Easy enough. She'd posed as a potential client, attended the industry mixer, and found herself drawn into conversation about—of all things—padel.

"It's like tennis but shorter," he'd said, smiling with genuine warmth. "Less posturing, more connection."

She'd laughed, and the sound had surprised her. Real.

They played Sundays. The court became her confessional. Between rallies, she learned he'd built his company from nothing, that he employed formerly incarcerated people, that he donated profits to literacy programs. Her job required compromising him—finding leverage, planting evidence, destroying him so her client could acquire his patents cheap.

Instead, she fell in love with his certainty. The way he bore responsibility without complaint. The way his eyes crinkled when she finally told him her real name.

"I know," he'd said, slicing a return shot down the line. "I ran your background after week three."

"And you kept playing?"

"Everyone deserves to be more than their worst mistake."

The dead drop was scheduled for midnight. She sat in her car, the encrypted drive heavy in her pocket, watching his office windows. Inside, she knew, cables hum with data she could siphon—enough to ruin him.

She remembered the way he'd held her after last Sunday's match. How he'd said, "You don't have to be what they made you."

Elena started the ignition and drove away from the drop point. The agency would find her eventually. But for the first time in three years, she wasn't just bearing witness to her own decay. She was choosing something else.

Alive, finally. Worth the risk.
