Dead Connection Blues

cablezombiesphinx

The internet died at 8:47 PM on a Friday. Obviously.

Maya stared at the blinking modem lights like they held the meaning of life. Her phone showed zero bars. The whole house was a digital dead zone.

"Mom! The cable's out again!"

"Call the company, Maya!" her mom yelled from upstairs. "You're sixteen, you can handle this."

Maya groaned. Another adult responsibility shoved her way. Meanwhile, her group chat was probably exploding without her. Lex was supposed to post the party location tonight. Tonight. If she missed it, she'd be the only one not there, again.

She dragged herself to the landline phone (who even had those anymore?) feeling like a total zombie. Three hours of sleep + two tests + soccer practice = death. Actual death. Her face in the hallway mirror confirmed: purple circles under her eyes, hair in a messy bun, wearing the same hoodie she'd worn all week. This was fine. Everything was fine.

On the phone, the automated menu was a sphinx of riddles. "Press 1 for billing. Press 2 for technical support. Press 3 if you hate your life and want to stay on hold forever."

Maya pressed 2. Then waited. And waited. Music that sounded like elevator music from a haunted hospital played on repeat.

Twenty minutes later, a human voice finally came through. "Cable and Internet, how can I help you?"

"Our internet's dead. I have a... thing I need to be online for."

"Thing?" The technician sounded amused. "Like a party?"

Maya's face burned. "No. I mean, maybe. Look, can you just fix it?"

"Hmm. Let me ask you a riddle first."

"What?"

"A sphinx asks: What connects everyone but touches nothing?"

"The internet? Which is literally not working right now?"

The technician laughed. "You're quick. Alright, let me reset something from my end. Should be back in five."

Maya waited, heart racing. Her phone lit up. Then her laptop. Then the group chat notifications started flooding in.

LEX: Old Miller's Barn. 10 PM. Don't be lame.

SAM: everyone's going rn

Maya stared at the screen, then at herself in the mirror. Zombie Maya or not, she wasn't missing this.

"Mom! I'm going out!"

She grabbed her jacket. The cable was fixed. The zombie was waking up. And the riddle of whether to stay home or live a little? Finally solved.
