Dead Battery Summer

Maya's phone died at 2:47 PM—right as Jake was typing something back. She stared at the black screen like it had personally betrayed her. Three years of friendship, countless inside jokes, and the moment he finally started flirting, her iPhone decided to go full zombie on her. Dead. Gone. Zero signs of life.

"You okay?" Liam asked, flopping onto the lounge chair beside her. His cousin's pool party raged behind them—splash fights, laughter, someone's terrible music choice blasting through portable speakers.

Maya waved her dead phone like a weapon. "My charger's at home. My social life is officially over."

Liam laughed, then frowned. "Wait, isn't that the same cable you lent me last week?"

Heat flooded her cheeks. "You still have it?"

"It's in my backpack! Inside!" He stood up, then hesitated. "Unless you'd rather stay out here and—"

"Lead the way."

The house felt huge and empty compared to the backyard chaos. They found his bag in the guest room, and there it was—her charging cable, tangled with his headphones and a half-eaten granola bar.

"Maya!" Sophie's voice floated down the hall. "We need a fourth for padel! You down?"

Panic. Sophie was the social ladder rung Maya'd been trying to reach since seventh grade—all perfect hair and effortless confidence and a squad that moved like a single organism. Now Sophie was asking Maya to join?

"One sec!" Maya called back. She plugged her phone in. 1%. Enough. The screen flickered to life. Jake's unfinished message blinked at her: "been wanting to tell you—"

"Coming!" Maya shoved the phone into her pocket and followed Liam toward the backyard.

Her phone buzzed against her hip. She ignored it.

The padel court waited. Sophie's friends waited. The entire version of herself she'd been trying to become waited.

And sometimes, Maya realized as she stepped into the sunlight, the most important texts aren't the ones on your screen.
