Dead Battery, Living Life

Maya stared at her cracked iPhone screen, the battery icon flashing red at 3%. It had been a whole hour since she last checked it, which was basically a personal record. The group chat was blowing up about Jordan's party tonight, but she couldn't focus. Not with the zombie apocalypse happening inside her brain.

"You look like actual death," Chloe said, sliding into the cafeteria seat opposite her. "Rough night?"

"Rough morning," Maya groaned, resting her forehead on the cool table. "My mom made me take these vitamin D supplements because apparently I'm 'vitamin deficient.' They taste like chalk and regret."

Chloe snorted. "At least your mom cares. Mine thinks emoji-filled texts count as parenting."

Maya's phone buzzed one last time before dying completely. The screen went black, reflecting her tired eyes. For a second, she felt that familiar panic—what if someone needed her? What if she missed something? But then something strange happened. She felt... free.

"My phone's dead," she said, almost surprised.

"So? Charge it."

"No, I mean—maybe I won't. Maybe I'll just... exist for a while. Without performing for an audience."

Chloe studied her. "You feeling okay? You sound almost philosophical."

"I'm serious, Chlo. We're all zombies, you know? Scrolling, liking, posting, living for the algorithm. When was the last time we did something because we actually wanted to, not because it would look good on our story?"

Chloe was quiet for a moment. Then: "Wanna skip Jordan's? We could go to that rooftop downtown. Watch the sunset like losers in a teen movie."

Maya sat up, the fog in her brain lifting. "Yes. A thousand times yes."

They walked out of school without looking back, Maya's dead iPhone heavy in her pocket like an anchor she'd finally decided to cut. For the first time in forever, she didn't feel like a zombie going through the motions of being alive. She felt present, real, hungry for something genuine.

"Hey," Chloe said as they headed toward the rooftop. "Maybe that vitamin thing is working. You look less like death already."

Maya laughed. "Maybe. Or maybe I just finally woke up."
