Dead Battery, Alive Heart

iphonezombiecable

Maya's iPhone clung to 4% battery like her social life depended on it—which, honestly, it kinda did. The charging cable lay frayed and useless across her desk, another casualty of freshman year's chaos.

Outside, the world had ended three weeks ago. Actual zombies—shambling, groaning, barely recognizable as former teachers and neighbors—roamed the suburbs. Maya's biggest problem wasn't survival. It was that Kai, the cute skater boy from pre-calc, had finally texted her back.

"u alive? lol" his message read. The irony was practically physical.

She'd spent the entire apocalypse low-key crushing on him from across the computer lab, watching him doodle zombies in the margins of his notebook while she pretended to understand functions. Now that everything had literally gone to hell, they were finally talking.

"yeah lol u?" she typed back, heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. 2% battery.

"same. my house is a zoo. literally."

Maya giggled, then immediately felt guilty. Her little sister was asleep in the closet, their parents were—they weren't coming back. But for five seconds, typing with Kai, she felt normal again. Like homework and crushes and petty drama still mattered.

"i found a working charger at the abandoned best buy," he wrote. "if u can get here, we can charge our phones together."

Together. The word hit her harder than any zombie movie ever had.

1%. Outside, something groaned. Maya grabbed her backpack, checked the makeshift barricade one last time, and slipped into the apocalyptic twilight. She'd face a thousand zombies for one fully charged iPhone and the chance to sit next to someone who made her feel alive in a dead world.
