Crushed Velvet Confidence

Maya tugged the crushed velvet bucket hat lower over her eyes, certain it was doing absolutely nothing to hide the panic spreading across her face. Her first real high school party. Three minutes in, and she'd already managed to spill punch on her shoes while checking her iPhone for the fifteenth time.

"You look like you're plotting someone's murder," a voice said.

Maya looked up. A guy with neon orange hair stood there, holding—ridiculously—a whole orange like it was completely normal.

"I'm plotting my own exit," Maya muttered, thumbs still hovering over her screen. "This was a mistake."

"Nah, you just need the right accessory." He tossed her the orange. "Trust me, nothing says 'I'm confident' like casually eating fruit at a party."

Maya caught it reflexively. "Who are you?"

"Leo. Your new best friend." He grinned. "Your old best friend would've left you alone in that corner looking like a wallflower with social anxiety."

A sudden collective gasp rippled through the room. A massive Golden Retriever had bounded through the front door, tongue lolling, tail clearing everything off the coffee table in its wake.

"That's—I think that's Mr. Henderson's dog from next door," Maya said, straightening. "We should—"

"We should absolutely let him live his best life," Leo interrupted, but he was already moving.

Without thinking, Maya followed. The chase ended in the backyard, where the dog was happily decimating a forgotten pizza box. Leo and Maya stood side by side, breathless, as the owner came sprinting over, apologizing profusely.

"That," Maya said, peeling her orange with suddenly steady fingers, "was the most excitement I've had all year."

"Welcome to high school," Leo said. "It's 90% awkward chaos, 10% moments that make you feel alive." He held out his hand. "Now give me a section of that orange. I'm technically still your friend, but I need fruit payment for saving you from wallflower status."

Maya laughed, and it didn't feel forced. The hat somehow ended up on Leo's head. She didn't ask for it back.
