Cowboy Hat at the Pool Party

I stood at the edge of the pool, clutching my ridiculous cowboy hat like it was a lifeline. Maya's cousin's graduation party—literally the last place I wanted to be. The pool glittered with that perfect summer evening blue, and everyone looked so effortless, so chill, so not me.

"You gonna stand there all night or actually swim?" Jayden called out, splashing water in my direction. He was wearing that stupid muscle tee he always wore, flexing like he owned the place.

I mumbled something about needing to take my vitamin. Total lie. I'd started taking these gummy "focus vitamins" because my friend said they'd help with social anxiety, but honestly? I think they were just glorified candy. Still, I popped two earlier like they were magic.

The sky purpled overhead. First rumble of thunder had people glancing up, but nobody moved yet. I watched Maya laughing with her friends, her hair wet and perfect, and felt that familiar ache in my chest—the FOMO that hits different when you know you're on the outside looking in.

Then it happened. Lightning cracked across the sky, bright and sudden, and everyone screamed-screamed, the good kind. Rain came down like the sky was dumping a bucket over us all. We scrambled toward the covered patio, and in the chaos, someone knocked my hat off.

I froze. For a second, I thought about bolting. But then Maya grabbed my hand.

"Come on!" she laughed, pulling me under the shelter.

We stood there, dripping wet, shoulder to shoulder with half the people I'd been avoiding all night. Someone started singing that song that was everyone's jam last month. Jayden passed around sodas. And suddenly, I wasn't the weird kid in the cowboy hat anymore. I was just wet and cold and laughing along with everyone else.

"Love the hat," Maya said, bumping my shoulder.

I took a breath, pulled the hat back on, and finally started dancing.
