Courtside Chaos
Maya's palms were already sweating, and she hadn't even stepped onto the **padel** court yet. Her crush, Jake, had invited her to play, and she'd spent the morning dramatically rehearsing casual responses in her mirror.
"No worries, I basically live for sports," she'd practiced, ignoring that her closest relationship with athletics was watching from the sidelines while clutching a bottle of **water** like a emotional support beverage.
She'd pulled her dad's old baseball **hat** low over her forehead—partially for sun protection, mostly to hide the fact that her nervous blush had started at her collarbone and was steadily migrating northward. The plan was foolproof: look athletic, stay cool, definitely don't face-plant in front of the boy who'd been in her Instagram likes for three weeks straight.
Jake waved from across the court, looking annoyingly perfect in his athletic gear. "Ready to get destroyed?"
"Bring it, Campos," Maya called back, her voice cracking slightly on the second word. Smooth. Real smooth.
They were tied at match point when disaster struck. Maya wound up for what she mentally dubbed "The Shot of Destiny"—a moment that would surely cement her status as cool and athletic. Instead, her foot caught on something orange and furry that had been sleeping near the fence line.
A **cat**—the neighborhood's notoriously grumpy stray, Mr. Whiskers—let out a yowl that sounded suspiciously like judgment as Maya went down. Her **water** bottle flew in one direction, her dignity in another. The **hat** tumbled off, revealing hair that was now significantly less Instagram-worthy than it had been five minutes ago.
She expected Jake to laugh. Instead, he was at her side in seconds, helping her up while trying to shoo away a still-grumpy Mr. Whiskers.
"You okay?" he asked, actually concerned. "That cat has it out for everyone. Last week, he tripped the mail carrier."
Maya started laughing—really laughing—as Jake retrieved her **hat** and handed back her **water** bottle. They sat on the **padel** court while Mr. Whiskers regally stalked away, clearly pleased with his disruption.
"So," Jake said, grinning, "still up for game point? Or should we call it a draw and get ice cream instead?"
Maya realized her hands weren't sweating anymore. "Ice cream sounds like the better champion," she said, and something about the way he smiled back told her the embarrassment had been worth it.
