Court Side Confessions
My hair was supposed to be this whole transformation. Pinterest promised beach waves, Instagram said the shoulder-length cut would be iconic, but instead I looked like a poodle that lost a fight with a lawnmower. Three days into summer, and I was already dodging mirrors.
Which made it absolutely perfect timing for Jake to invite me to play padel with his squad.
I'd been crushing on Jake since seventh period English, when he quoted The Office and actually laughed at my terrible joke. Now there I was, standing at the padel court with my tragic hair, trying to look like I belonged in his world of pastel polos and effortless cool.
"You can be on my team," Jake said, tossing me a racquet like it was no big deal. His hair flopped perfectly in the wind. "Just don't go easy on me."
Like I could. My palms were sweating so much I could barely grip the racquet. Every serve felt like walking onto a stage without knowing my lines. But then something clicked - maybe it was the sound of the ball hitting the glass wall, or Jake yelling "SHEESH!" when I returned a serve that should've been impossible, or the way the game demanded so much focus I forgot to be self-conscious.
We lost, obviously. Jake's sister's team destroyed us 6-2. But afterward, when everyone was grabbing smoothies and someone made a comment about my hair - not mean, just surprised - Jake shrugged.
"It's giving art student chic," he said, taking a sip of his drink. "Honestly, it's kind of a vibe."
And just like that, my beach-wave disaster became my signature style.
Later that night, I stared at my carnival prize goldfish swimming in his bowl on my nightstand. I'd won him two weeks ago, and his name was Midas because everything he touched stayed exactly the same - which was basically nothing.
But that was the thing about goldfish. They didn't care about fitting in. They just did their thing, swimming in circles, looking slightly ridiculous and owning it completely.
"You know what, Midas?" I whispered. "Maybe that's the whole point."
The next day at the padel courts, I pulled my hair into these messy half-buns that definitely weren't Pinterest-approved. Jake texted me later: new look, same game. adding the fire emoji.
Some transformations aren't about changing yourself. They're about finally meeting the person you've been all along.
