Court Side Chaos
Maya's phone buzzed on her nightstand at 7:43 AM. Three texts from Jake, each more desperate than the last.
'padel at 10??'
'u coming??'
'???'
Maya groaned into her pillow. She'd been crushing on Jake since seventh grade, when he'd let her borrow his extra hat during the sudden downpour at the orientation picnic. That neon yellow snapback still lived in her closet, a shrine to her most iconic moment.
Now here she was, three years later, finally invited to the legendary Saturday morning padel sessions that only the 'core friend group' attended. The problem? Maya had never held a racquet in her life.
'Be there!' she typed back, thumbs shaking.
Three hours later, Maya stood at the entrance of the rec center, clutching a borrowed racquet like it was a grenade. Inside, the court echoed with laughter and the distinctive *thwack-squeak* of rubber soles on concrete.
'You made it!' Jake called, waving her over. He looked annoyingly good in his backwards cap and sweat-dampened shirt.
Maya's stomach did backflips. 'Yeah, wouldn't miss it.' Her voice came out weirdly high-pitched. Smooth.
'This is Sam,' Jake said, gesturing to a girl with the coolest hair Maya had ever seen — half-shaved, dyed lavender. 'Sam, this is Maya. She's... really good at stuff.'
Sam raised an eyebrow. 'Oh yeah? What stuff?'
Maya's mind went blank. 'I... have a pet goldfish named Bubbles?'
The whole group went silent.
'Wait,' Sam said, stepping closer. 'You named your goldfish Bubbles? That's literally the most iconic thing I've ever heard.'
'You think?' Maya asked, hope rising in her chest.
'Same,' said Jake's other friend, diving into an animated story about his own fish-keeping adventures.
As they played — Maya missing every ball but laughing the entire time — she realized something. She didn't need to be good at padel. She just needed to show up. Sometimes the coolest thing about you wasn't what you could do, but who you were. Even if who you were was a girl who loved her goldfish and couldn't hit a ball to save her life.
'Next Saturday?' Jake asked as they left.
'Maybe,' Maya said, adjusting Jake's old yellow hat that she'd 'borrowed' today. 'But only if I can bring fish stories.'
Jake laughed. 'Deal.'
