Corporate Undead

Elena stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror—dark circles under eyes that had seen too many spreadsheets at 2 AM. She felt like a **zombie**, shambling through another Monday, her soul slowly hollowed out by quarterly targets and performance reviews.

The bathroom door creaked open. Her boss, Marcus, lumbered in. A **bear** of a man in every sense—massive shoulders, perpetually gruff demeanor, and a tendency to maul anyone who missed a deadline. He paused at the sink beside her, washing his hands with aggressive efficiency.

"Schmidt wants the Q3 projections by EOD," Marcus grunted. "Don't make me come find you."

Elena nodded, forcing herself to breathe. In her cubicle, she reached for the velvet **hat** perched atop her monitor—a vintage cloche she'd bought in Paris six years ago, back when she still believed in romance and adventure. It was her anchor, a reminder of the woman she used to be.

She pulled up the photos on her phone—Mochi, her tabby **cat**, curled in a sunbeam at home. The only living thing that still greeted her with genuine enthusiasm. Mochi didn't care about KPIs or deliverables. Mochi just wanted warmth and affection, two things Elena had starved for since the divorce.

Her phone buzzed. *unknown number*

"This is Elena."

"They're laying off twenty people, including your department. Pack your things."

She sat frozen for thirty seconds. Then, instinctively, her legs started moving before her mind could catch up. She found herself **running** down the corridor, past confused colleagues, toward the exit.

The elevator dinged. Ground floor.

Outside, the sun hit her face. She inhaled, really inhaled, for the first time in months. Her phone buzzed again—HR demanding her return. She silenced it.

At home, Mochi twined around her ankles, purring. Elena picked up her cloche **hat**, placed it on her head, and finally felt alive again.

The **zombie** had died. Something else was beginning.
