Corporate Espionage at the Holiday Inn

The memo from Legal sat on Elena's desk like a **lightning** strike — sudden, blinding, destructive. Someone had been leaking confidential documents to competitors. The handwriting expert had narrowed it down to three people in the department. Elena was not one of them.

That's when she noticed Marcus. He'd started leaving early. Taking lunches at odd hours. And last week, she'd seen him slip into the pool area at the Holiday Inn where they'd held the quarterly review — crouching behind a potted plant, camera phone raised toward a woman who wasn't his wife.

'You going to eat that?' Marcus asked now, gesturing to the container of leftover **spinach** and feta pasta Elena had brought for lunch.

She pushed it toward him, watching him shovel it in with the same desperate hunger she'd noticed in everything lately. Marcus was drowning. Gambling debt, she suspected from the half-heard phone calls. Or maybe something worse.

The **pool** of suspects had narrowed. It wasn't just about the documents anymore. Marcus was selling more than company secrets. He was trading in anyone who got close enough to see him sinking.

Elena had become an accidental **spy** — not by choice, but by the simple accident of paying attention. She watched him now through the glass walls of the breakroom, saw the way his hands shook when he thought no one was looking. The real tragedy wasn't the betrayal. It was how thoroughly she understood it.

She opened her laptop. Drafted the email to HR. Then closed it without sending. Tomorrow, she decided. Tomorrow she would let him burn.

Outside, rain finally broke, and somewhere in the distance, real lightning split the sky.
