Corporate Ascent

Elena adjusted the fascinator—calling it a hat felt generous, given its precarious perch atop her carefully styled hair. The charity gala glittered with expensive champagne and desperate ambition, the corporate pyramid towering invisible above them all. She'd spent two decades climbing its levels, her reflection in the bathroom mirror showing more silver threading through her chestnut strands each year.

Then she saw him: Marcus, twenty years her junior, orange tie knotted perfectly against his crisp shirt. The protégé she'd mentored, now being positioned to leapfrog over her for the VP role.

'Smooth move, inviting him,' Sarah whispered beside her, nursing her sparkling water. 'Reminds everyone you're... what's the word they use? Seasoned.'

The spinach caught between her incisor and canine. She could feel it with her tongue, a tiny green betrayal she'd discovered too late—twenty minutes into the event, after she'd already spoken to the board members, after she'd already smiled at Marcus with what she'd thought was grace. Now she just looked desperate.

She excused herself to the restroom. Staring at her reflection, the woman looking back seemed unfamiliar. When had the hunger for the next rung of the pyramid become fear of falling?

Marcus appeared in the doorway, hesitating. 'Elena, I told them I wouldn't take it unless you were part of the transition.' He adjusted his orange tie, suddenly looking less like a shark and more like a kid who'd just been handed something he didn't earn. 'You taught me everything. It should be both of us.'

She checked her teeth. The spinach was gone. She fixed her hat and met his eyes in the mirror.

'Don't apologize for being ambitious, Marcus.' She turned, offering the smile she'd perfected through board meetings and budget cuts. 'But you're right. It will be both of us.'

The pyramid remained, but suddenly the view from her level looked different. Not a pinnacle to reach, but a structure to rebuild.
