Corner Pocket Confidence
Maya's backwards baseball cap had become her security blanket sophomore year. Whenever she felt awkward—which was basically always at parties—she'd pull the brim low and vanish into its shadow.
"You're not actually gonna wear that inside, are you?" Jordan asked, gesturing at her hat with their red solo cup. "It's a pool party, Maya. Outside. Sun. Swimmers." They gestured vaguely at the splashing chaos of Tyler's backyard.
Maya tightened her jaw. "Whatever. I'm fine."
"You don't look fine." Jordan's voice softened. "You look like you're calculating escape routes. Again."
Because Jordan was right. Maya was already mapping her exit—slip out through the side gate, walk home, pretend she'd had a "great time." She'd done it three times this month already.
Then she heard it—the sharp crack of pool balls breaking from Tyler's garage.
Without thinking, Maya drifted toward the open garage door. Inside, a beat-up table sat under fluorescent lights, and a couple of seniors she barely knew were playing. Not swimming pool. Pool pool.
"You shoot?" A lanky guy with bleach-tipped hair asked, noticing her hovering.
Maya's mouth opened before her brain could interfere. "Yeah. Actually."
"Rack 'em up," he said, sliding her a cue.
And then something weird happened. Maya bent over the felt, lined up her shot, and her hat didn't matter. Her anxiety didn't matter. The overchlorinated pool smell, the thumping bass from outside, Jordan's concerned watching eyes—none of it mattered. Just the click of the cue ball, the satisfying roll into the pocket, the focus narrowing to perfect geometry.
"Okay, damn," the guy said.
"You hustling us?" his friend asked, laughing.
Maya grinned. A real one. "Maybe a little."
Jordan appeared in the doorway, eyebrows raised. "Since when do you play pool?"
"Since today," Maya said, lining up another shot. The hat stayed on, but she'd stopped hiding behind it.
"Teach me?" Jordan asked.
Maya's smile widened. "Get a cue."
They played until the sun went down, and for the first time all year, Maya forgot to calculate an exit route.
