Connections Severed

The coaxial cable lay coiled on the floor like a dead snake, its copper heart exposed where she'd yanked it from the wall. Three years of premium channels, on-demand movies, bundled packages — all disconnected with one violent pull.

Elena picked up the cable, heavier than she expected. Behind the entertainment center, dust bunnies had formed their own civilization. She knelt, her knees cracking, and reached into the darkness. Her palm brushed against something familiar — his knit hat, wedged behind the TV cabinet where it had fallen six months ago and never been retrieved.

She pulled it out. The wool was pilled at the crown, stretched where he'd constantly tugged it down over his ears. His hair had been longer then, dark curls that escaped the hat's rim, catching the light when they watched Sunday morning cartoons hungover and happy.

Now the apartment was silent. No cable news blaring while he cooked. No reality shows dribbling from the bedroom while she worked late. The TV stood black and dormant, its screen reflecting her diminished living room.

She considered reconnecting the cable. The technician had left instructions, color-coded diagrams she'd actually taped to the wall. But something stopped her hand.

Instead, she carried his hat to the balcony door. The city below hummed with millions of stories, millions of lives tangled together like the wires beneath the streets. She opened the door and let the hat fall. It caught the wind briefly, a dark bird taking clumsy flight, then spiraled down toward the alley.

Inside, she sat on the couch and ran her palm over the cushion beside her, still warm somehow, still carrying the ghost of where he used to sit. The cable remained on the floor, a tangle she'd unravel tomorrow. Tonight, she needed the quiet. Tonight, she needed to remember how to exist without the noise.
