Concession Stand Courage
Maya's summer plan involved watching Netflix and avoiding human interaction, but her mom had other ideas. Welcome to the concession stand at the local baseball field—population: her, sweating profusely in a polyester uniform.
"You're up, kid," said Frank, her manager who smelled permanently of popcorn and regret. The line stretched toward the parking lot, a human pyramid of impatient customers growing by the second.
Maya's hands trembled as she reached for the cash register. This would be fine. This would be—
Her iphone buzzed in her apron pocket. Probably Skylar group-chatting about Tyler's party tonight. The one everyone was going to except her, because why would shy Maya be invited anywhere that required actual social skills?
"Hey! Can I get a hot dog or what?" Some baseball dad impatiently waved a ten-dollar bill.
"Sorry!" Maya squeaked. Her face burned hotter than the metal warming tray.
Her phone buzzed again. Then again. Then—
CRASH.
The wire shelf behind her collapsed, sending bags of chips tumbling everywhere. Like a bad infomercial, but in real life, with actual witnesses.
Maya stared at the chip disaster. Her throat tightened. She was going to cry. At a baseball game. In front of everyone. This was it. This was her peak loser moment.
Then someone moved beside her. Tyler. The Tyler. From AP English. The one whose party she definitely wasn't invited to.
"Whoa," he said, dropping to his knees. " tactical chip avalanche."
He started gathering bags, not making fun of her. Just helping.
"Thanks," she managed, her voice tiny.
"No problem. My cat does this exact thing at home. Knocks everything over, then acts like it's everyone else's problem." He grinned, and Maya's stomach did that flip-flop thing that TikTok always talked about.
Together, they cleaned up the chips. Customers actually waited, some even helped. When the last bag was back on the shelf, Maya finally checked her phone.
Skylar: Dude, where are you?
Skylar: Tyler asked if you're working tonight
Skylar: HE WANTED TO KNOW IF YOU'RE COMING
Skylar: WE'RE WAITING FOR YOU AT THE GATE
Maya looked up. Tyler was still there, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck.
"So, um," he said. "You're coming to the party after?"
Maybe her summer wasn't going to be a total disaster after all.
