Comet and the Lightning Pool
Comet was a golden retriever who loved two things more than anything in the world: running through the tall grass and splashing in his family's backyard pool. Every afternoon, he would dash around the yard, his golden fur flying like sunshine, then leap into the cool blue water with a mighty splash.
One summer evening, as Comet chased butterflies across the lawn, the sky suddenly turned dark purple. Thunder rumbled like a giant tummy growling, and jagged bolts of lightning flashed across the clouds. Most dogs would have run for cover, but Comet noticed something strange. Each time the lightning struck, the pool sparkled and shimmered like it was filled with stardust instead of water.
Curious, Comet crept closer to the glowing pool. Suddenly, a particularly bright bolt of lightning zapped downward, and the water began to swirl like a giant whirlpool. But Comet wasn't afraid. He sensed something magical was happening.
With a happy bark, he jumped right into the spinning water!
Instead of splashing, Comet found himself floating in a beautiful underwater kingdom. Tiny mer-people with shimmering tails swam around him, cheering. "You're here! The Brave One!" they exclaimed. "We need your help!"
It turned out that their underwater home was in trouble from a grumpy octopus who kept blocking their playground with giant seaweed. The mer-people had been watching Comet from above, admiring how he never gave up when he was running or playing.
Comet's tail thumped happily. He knew just what to do. Using his powerful swimming paws and his famous running determination, he untangled the seaweed and made friends with the lonely octopus, who just wanted someone to play with.
As the lightning storm ended above, Comet floated back up to the surface. He climbed out of the pool, shook himself dry, and noticed the pool looked normal again. But sometimes, when lightning flashes during summer storms, Comet swears he can see his mer-friends waving from below.
That night, Comet learned that the bravest thing you can do isn't running away from scary things—it's diving right in to help others. And he discovered that magic can be found in the most unexpected places, even in your own backyard.
