Chlorine Waves

Jordan's summer was supposed to be perfect. Country club membership, new contacts, and finally learning padel because apparently that's what cool freshmen did instead of literally anything fun.

"You need more protein," her mom said, sliding a spinach smoothie across the kitchen counter. It looked like something you'd use to fertilize plants.

Jordan grabbed it anyway. Chugged it like a shot. Felt vaguely healthy in a depressing way.

At the club, everyone was already there. The popular crew. The ones whose lives looked like Instagram highlights even in person. They were at the padel courts, laughing like tennis was actually fun.

"Jordan! Come play!" Chloe waved. Chloe, who had somehow gotten even prettier since eighth grade, whose smile could make you forget your own name.

Jordan grabbed a racket. Her hands were already sweating. This was fine. This was normal. This was what teenagers did — played sports they barely understood while trying not to humiliate themselves.

The first ball Jordan hit ricocheted off her own racket frame and flew straight into the pool nearby.

Everyone stared.

"My bad," Jordan mumbled. Her face burned. She could literally feel her DNA rewriting itself to become eternal embarrassment.

Then came the dog.

No one knew whose dog it was — some golden retriever that had apparently decided today was the day to live his best life. He bounded onto the padel court, grabbed a ball in his mouth, and made a beeline for the pool.

"No!" someone shouted.

The dog launched himself into the water with absolute joy. Splash.

Chloe was laughing so hard she couldn't stand up. Jordan was too. Suddenly nobody was watching Jordan's terrible serve. Suddenly the perfect country club afternoon had been completely upended by a very good boy who just wanted to swim.

"Someone get him out!" But no one moved. It was too perfect.

The dog paddled to the edge, shook spinach-green pool water all over everyone's pristine white outfits, and looked genuinely proud of himself.

Jordan took off her shoes. "Whatever."

"What are you—" Chloe started, but Jordan was already jumping.

The pool was cold and perfect and everything. Swimming fully clothed in a $80 tennis outfit. The chlorine smell was sharp and real. The dog was doing laps beside her like they were training for the Olympics together.

When she surfaced, Chloe was standing at the edge, grinning. "You're actually insane."

"Join me," Jordan said. "The water's fine."

Chloe hesitated. Then —

splash.

They floated there in their expensive clothes, watching the dog shake water everywhere like he'd personally invented fun. The padel game was forgotten. The smoothies were forgotten. Jordan's parents' expectations were distant and irrelevant.

"You know," Chloe said, floating on her back. "I hate spinach."

"Me too," Jordan said. "Me too."

And somehow, that was the most honest thing anyone had said all summer.
