Chlorine & Secrets

Maya practiced her butterfly stroke, counting strokes per breath like it mattered. It didn't. The only thing that mattered was three lanes over, where Chloe was laughing with The Populars. They'd been best friends since seventh grade, until Chloe decided to reinvent herself over summer.

Now Chloe was a wellness influencer in training, posting about her morning routines and vitamin supplements like her life was somehow deeper than everyone else's. Maya had found herself secretly checking Chloe's stories at 2 AM, a low-key spy mission into her former best friend's shiny new world.

"You're staring again," said Leo from the next lane, shaking water from his hair. "It's creepy."

"I'm not staring. I'm observing. There's a difference."

"Sure, spy girl. Whatever you say." Leo rolled his eyes, but he was grinning.

The coach blew the whistle. Regionals next week. Maya's events were the only things keeping her from fully spiraling.

After practice, the locker room humidity hit like always. Chloe was by the mirrors, fixing her hair with three other girls. Their laughter echoed.

Maya grabbed her bag, head down.

"Maya."

She stopped. Chloe was standing there, alone now.

"Hey."

"I saw your times," Chloe said. "You're going to crush regionals."

Maya shrugged. "Maybe. You're good too?"

"Yeah. But..." Chloe looked away. "I miss you. The vitamin stuff? It's just—my mom's been on me about eating disorders, so I'm supposed to post about healthy habits. It's not real."

The words hung there.

"I've been watching your stories," Maya admitted. "Like, obsessively. I feel like a loser."

Chloe laughed. "Same. I check your Spotify activity every day to see what you're listening to."

They stared at each other.

"Wanna get boba after school tomorrow?" Chloe asked. "Like old times?"

"Yeah. Like old times."

Walking home, Maya realized sometimes the thing you're spying on is just a reflection of what you miss. And maybe that was okay.
