Chlorine & Second Chances
Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her phone like a lifeline. The water glittered blue and inviting, but her stomach did somersaults. This was it—the first party of sophomore year, and everyone was already in the pool except her.
"You coming in or what?" yelled Jake from the shallow end, splashing water everywhere.
Maya's hand went instinctively to her hair. She'd spent forty-five minutes perfecting the beach waves that morning, and now she was supposed to ruin it? For what? Some stupid Instagram photos that would be irrelevant by Monday?
"Hold up," Lena said, appearing beside her with a knowing smile. She pulled a neon orange bottle from her pocket—vitamin C gummies. "My mom says these prevent chlorinated hair disaster. Want one?"
Maya laughed, finally relaxing. "Sure, why not. Can't hurt."
They sat on the edge, legs dangling in the cool water. "You know," Lena said, popping a gummy, "Jake's been asking about you all week."
"Yeah right."
"No cap. He thinks you're mysterious. Like, sphinx-level mysterious." Lena nodded toward Jake, who was currently attempting (and failing) to do a handstand in the water. "Boys are dumb, but they notice things."
Maya watched Jake wipe chlorine from his eyes, still grinning like an idiot. Something shifted inside her—all that anxiety about her hair, about looking perfect, about whether people would notice her new curves or her slightly crooked smile—it all felt suddenly ridiculous. Nobody was watching that closely. Except maybe Jake.
The water felt different now—not something to fear, but something to dive into.
"Hey Jake!" Maya called, standing up and shaking out her carefully-styled waves. "Race you to the other side."
"You're on!"
She jumped without thinking, chlorine hitting her senses, laughter bubbling up from somewhere deep in her chest. Lena was right—boys were dumb. But sometimes, that wasn't the worst thing in the world.
And her hair? It would dry. Everything would dry. Eventually.
