Chlorine Kisses and Green Smoothie Chaos

Maya stood at the edge of the community pool, clutching her phone like it might save her from drowning in social awkwardness. Three weeks into summer and everything had changed. Her friend group had splintered like cracked ice — texts left unanswered, hangouts forgotten, everyone suddenly "too busy" when she reached out.

"You're overthinking it," said Jada, sliding onto the bench beside her. "People's schedules shift in summer. It's not personal."

But it felt personal. Especially with Chloe, her best friend since seventh grade, who'd been ghosting her since pool season started.

Determined to fix whatever was wrong, Maya decided on Operation Best-Friend-Recon. Step one: show up at Chloe's lifeguard shift with peace offerings. Step two: whatever smoothie recipe Chloe's new wellness-obsessed self was into.

The green smoothie sat heavy in Maya's stomach. Spinach, banana, mango, and papaya — supposedly packed with enough Vitamin C to boost her immune system and her confidence. Instead, it just made her mouth feel fuzzy.

She found Chloe at the deep end, whistle around her neck, scanning the water like a hawk. Chloe waved, smiling, and Maya felt ridiculous for worrying. But as she climbed onto the diving platform to say hi, her stomach did something not cute.

The papaya hit her all wrong.

She leaned over the edge, intending to whisper-yell a greeting, and instead burped so loudly it echoed. Chlorine stung her nose. Half the pool turned to stare.

Chloe's eyes widened. Then she burst out laughing. Not mean laughing — the doubled-over, can't-breathe laughing they'd done a million times before.

"Did you just burp at me from the diving platform?" Chloe called, wiping tears from her eyes. "That's your friendship outreach strategy?"

Maya started laughing too, helplessly. "I brought you a smoothie!"

Later, dangling their feet in the water, Chloe confessed she'd been distant because she'd gotten her first period and felt weird discussing it. Maya admitted she'd been obsessing over friendship dynamics because she'd never felt more lonely.

"We're both idiots," Chloe said, sipping the smoothie. "This is actually good. What's in it?"

"Spinach, papaya, and like, a million vitamins."

"Healthier than our friendship," Chloe said, "which is currently powered by chlorine and awkward burps."

Maya laughed so hard she snort-laughed. Some things never changed.
