Chlorine Kisses and Court Kings

Maya's hair hit the locker room floor in wet, chlorinated clumps. She'd been **swimming** since before she could walk — State finals, 5 AM practices, the whole deal. But today, she'd buzzed it all off during lunch period with kitchen shears and a shaking hand.

"Whoa, train wreck much?" Tyler materialized behind her, being his usual **bull** self. He towered over her, all varsity jacket and ego. "What, you trying out for the boys' team now?"

Maya's neck felt exposed. Naked. But she lifted her chin anyway. "Actually, I quit."

"You WHAT?" Her best friend Chen burst through the door, eyes wide. "You're literally the captain —"

"Not anymore." Maya grabbed her backpack. "I'm done drowning in other people's expectations."

That afternoon, she found herself at the rec center, watching something that looked like tennis but… chaos. People were playing off the walls, smashing balls with these solid paddles, laughing and swearing and living.

"It's **padel**," said a girl with a half-shaved head and galaxy-painted nails. "You wanna try?"

Maya stepped onto the court, still feeling phantom sensations where her **hair** used to be. But when she smashed that first ball — THWACK against the glass wall, her opponent diving and missing — something shifted in her chest.

"You're a natural," Galaxy-girl grinned. "I'm Sam. You've got anger-issues energy. I respect that."

Maya's first match was Friday. Tyler showed up, obviously, arms crossed like he owned the place. "This is pathetic, Maya. You're gonna throw away everything for some trendy sport?"

"Watch me," she said, and served.

She lost 6-4. But Sam high-fived her so hard her palm stung, and for the first time since she was seven, Maya didn't smell like chlorine. She smelled like sweat and possibility and the terrifying, electric freedom of not knowing who she was anymore.

"Next time," Sam said as they left the court. "You're gonna crush."

Maya touched the stubble on her head and smiled. "Yeah. I think I might."
