Chlorine Kisses

Maya's fingers trembled as she pulled her swim cap over her hair—the waist-length coils she'd spent two hours straightening that morning because Jason *definitely* noticed girls with flowy hair. Now the chlorine would turn it into a frizz disaster by seventh period.

"You good?" Chloe asked, adjusting her own cap like she'd been doing this for years.

"Yeah, just... first meet nerves." Maya forced a smile.

The coach blew his whistle. "Alright, Pyramid Relay! You know the drill—fastest swims anchor, everyone else builds the base."

Maya got stuck in the second heat. Again. Meanwhile, Hailey and her squad—the undisputed apex of Franklin High's social pyramid—lounged on the pool deck, their makeup somehow intact, perfect blowouts somehow immune to humidity.

*How.* Just—*how.*

"Maya Collins! You're up!"

She dove in. The water swallowed her, and suddenly none of it mattered. Not her flattened hair suffocating under silicone. Not Hailey's pyramid. Not Jason, who probably wouldn't notice her if she literally caught on fire.

She broke the surface gasping, third place. Not terrible. Not amazing.

But then Hailey's perfect hair extensions got caught in her cap during her anchor lap. She finished dead last.

Maya caught her eye afterward and—instead of crying or making excuses—Hailey just laughed. "So much for effortless beauty, right?"

"Honestly?" Maya pulled off her cap, letting her damp curls spring back to life. "I think the frizzy look is working for you."

Hailey actually smiled. "Maybe we should start a trend. Chlorine-chic." She gestured to her squad. "Wanna get boba after practice? Like, actual boba, not the pyramid scheme stuff my cousin keeps trying to sell us."

"Wait, you fell for that too?"

"I'm two hundred dollars deep and I have forty boxes of wellness tea I'm never gonna drink."

Maya laughed—really laughed. Maybe the social pyramid wasn't so rigid after all. Maybe she could just swim, with hair doing whatever hair wanted to do.

"Boba sounds perfect," she said. "But I'm paying. I've got a strict no-MLM policy."
