Chlorine Dreams and Vitamin Gummies

Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, her normally curly **hair** plastered to her forehead from the humid locker room air. It was the first meet of the season, and she could feel the pressure building in her chest like a clenched fist.

"You got this, Maya," said Chloe, sliding onto the bench beside her. Chloe's perfect blonde ponytail bounced like it had its own personality. Meanwhile, Maya's curls were staging a rebellion.

"Easy for you to say," Maya muttered, fumbling with her swim cap. "You didn't get stuck with the cursed lane assignment."

Lane 4. The splash zone. Where all the **water** displacement from the other lanes somehow magically converged to drown whoever was unfortunate enough to swim there. It was practically a conspiracy at this point.

Chloe dug into her gym bag and produced a neon orange bottle. "Here. My mom says these focus **vitamin** things actually work. I took one before my AP Bio exam and somehow got an A-minus."

Maya eyed the gummy suspiciously. "Your mom also thinks gluten causes communism."

"Fair point."

The whistle blew. Maya adjusted her goggles, took a deep breath, and positioned herself on the starting block. The water beneath her feet rippled like liquid silver, reflecting the harsh fluorescent lights overhead. Her heart hammered against her ribs.

"Take your mark..."

The moment the starting horn sounded, everything else fell away. The burning in her muscles, the awkward cafeteria incident earlier that week where she'd accidentally called her crush by the wrong name (who even mixes up Tyler and Taylor anyway?), the fact that she'd spent three hours the night before overthinking a text message that just said "lol"—all of it dissolved as she sliced through the water.

Her arms pulled. Her legs kicked. The water rushed past her ears like a muffled whisper. She wasn't Maya with the weird hair anymore. She wasn't the girl who somehow managed to make every conversation slightly awkward. She was just movement. Speed. Power.

When she touched the wall, everything rushed back in—the smell of chlorine, the thunderous applause, the realization that she'd actually done it.

Chloe was waiting at the edge of the pool, grinning like crazy. "What did I tell you? Those vitamins are magic!"

Maya pulled herself up, water streaming from her hair, and for the first time all day, she didn't care that her curls were flattened or that her cap had left a weird indent across her forehead. She'd gotten second place. She'd beaten the girl from the rival school who had been talking trash all week.

"Maybe," Maya said, shaking out her hair and feeling surprisingly okay about its chaotic state. "Or maybe I'm just secretly awesome."

"Definitely secretly awesome," Chloe agreed. "Want to go get food? I'm starving and I heard there's pizza in the cafeteria."

Maya grabbed her towel, the chlorine smell clinging to her skin like a badge of honor. Her hair would frizz up later. Her homework would still be waiting. That text message would still be slightly cringe. But right now, none of that mattered.

"Pizza sounds perfect."
