Chlorine Dreams and Pyramid Schemes
Summer humidity clung to Maya's skin as she stared at her phone, thumb hovering over the group chat. Her best friend Priya had been dragging her to Jordan's pool party all week, but Maya's social battery had been dead since finals.
"Please come," Priya had texted. "It's not a party without you. Also Jordan's brother will be there."
Maya sighed, grabbing her swimsuit and the bottle of vitamin D gummies her mom had guilt-tripped her into taking. "You need these for your mood," she'd said, handing over the neon bottle. Maya popped two, imagining they might actually work.
The walk to Jordan's house felt like running a marathon in ninety-degree heat. When she arrived, the pool area was already packed with the school's social pyramid in full display: the popular crew lounging on inflatables like aquatic royalty, the athletes dominating the deep end, everyone else scattered around the edges pretending not to care about their positioning.
Priya waved from the shallow end, already in conversation with Tyler—Jordan's cute brother. Maya's stomach did that annoying flip thing it always did when she saw him.
"You came!" Priya called, dragging Maya into the conversation. "Maya's basically a vitamin expert," she lied. "Tell Tyler about that whole keto thing you researched."
Maya blinked, caught off guard. "Uh, yeah? But actually that was mostly just me falling down wellness rabbit holes at 2 AM."
Tyler laughed, and Maya felt herself relaxing. They spent the next hour talking—about music, about the weird pressure of high school, about how they both felt like they were running on a treadmill they couldn't escape.
"I have a confession," Tyler said suddenly. "I only came because Priya told me you'd be here. I've wanted to talk to you since sophomore year."
Maya's heart raced as she glanced at Priya, who winked from across the pool. The social pyramid suddenly seemed less important, the vitamin gummies forgotten in her bag. Sometimes the best moments happen when you stop overthinking and just jump in.
