Chlorine Dreams and Green Smoothies
Maya's first day of swim tryouts and her stomach was doing backflips. Literally. Or maybe that was just the questionable smoothie she'd chugged that morning because TikTok said it would change her life.
"You got this, Maya," chirped Chloe, the sophomore with the perfect hair and the confidence of someone who'd never had a pimple in their life. She adjusted her goggles like they were designer accessories. "Just don't drown. Kidding. Sort of."
Maya forced a laugh, her palm sweating against her towel. The pool smelled like chlorine and teenage anxiety—a combo she was rapidly learning to associate with her entire high school experience.
Coach Reynolds blew his whistle. "Alright, newcomers! Let's see what you've got. Four laps. Any stroke. Go!"
The water hit her like ice. Maya's arms remembered something vaguely resembling swimming from that one summer of lessons when she was ten, but her legs were like, nah, we're good here. Meanwhile, Chloe was gliding through the water with the grace of a very athletic dolphin, making it look effortless while Maya was probably creating new species of splash.
After practice, collapsed on the pool deck, Maya's phone buzzed. Her mom: "Did you drink your vitamin smoothie? Don't forget the spinach!
She groaned. Why did her mom have to be so extra about the health stuff lately? Ever since the doctor mentioned her iron was low, it was like living with a walking nutrition blog.
Chloe flopped down next to her, wringing out her hair. "You didn't totally suck, by the way."
"Thanks?" Maya deadpanned.
"No, seriously. Most people quit halfway through first practice. You finished." Chloe shrugged. "That's lowkey impressive. Also, what's that green stuff in your water bottle?"
Maya considered lying. Saying it was some cool athletic supplement that pros used. But something about the way Chloe asked—genuinely curious, not mocking—made her go with the truth.
"Spinach," Maya admitted. "And some vitamin stuff. My mom's obsessed with my iron levels now. It's gross but I think it's working?"
Chloe burst out laughing. "Dude, same. My coach has me on this weird supplement routine that tastes like lawn clippings. We're out here being athletic AND suffering through green drinks. We're basically bonded for life now."
Maya's palm stopped sweating. Maybe high school wouldn't be so bad after all.
"Tomorrow," Chloe said, standing up and stretching, "bring me some of that nasty smoothie. Bet mine's worse."
Maya actually smiled. "You're on."
