Chlorine Dreams
Maya stared at the bottle of biotin gummies on her dresser. Her mom swore these 'hair vitamins' would transform her frizzy curls into Instagram-worthy waves by the time of Jess's pool party next week.
'You're overthinking it, Maya,' her best friend Chloe said through FaceTime. 'It's just a pool party. Not a fashion show.'
Easy for Chloe to say. Chloe's hair fell in perfect beachy waves without trying. Meanwhile, Maya had spent three hours watching YouTube tutorials on 'summer hair hacks' and debating whether to buy expensive leave-in conditioner.
The day of the party arrived with brutal July heat. Maya stood at the edge of Jess's backyard pool, clutching her towel like a security blanket. Everyone looked like they'd stepped out of a TikTok montage—glossy hair, flawless skin, curated swimwear.
She'd barely dipped her toes in when Tyler tossed a volleyball straight at her.
'Catch!'
Instinct took over. Maya lunged—straight into the shallow end.
Complete wipeout.
When she surfaced, sputtering chlorine water, her carefully styled hair plastered against her face like a wet rag. The laughter hit her first. Then the realization: her expensive hair products were dissolving into pool chemicals.
Something inside her cracked. Not in a bad way. In a 'what was I even stressing about?' way.
Maya pushed her hair back, feeling the weird weightlessness of water-logged curls. 'That was the most epic fail ever,' she announced, and everyone laughed with her this time.
She spent the next hour cannonballing, dunking Tyler, and discovering that pool water was actually kind of awesome when you stopped caring about looking perfect. Her hair turned into this wild, chlorinated halo—definitely not Instagram material, but honestly? Kind of awesome.
Later, floating on her back and staring at the sky, Maya realized something. None of those vitamin gummies had magically transformed her hair. But jumping into that pool? That had transformed something way more important.
Her phone buzzed. Chloe: 'Did you survive???'
Maya grinned, water dripping everywhere. 'Thriving, actually.'
