Chlorine Dreams

The pool party at Tyler's house was supposed to be lit, but honestly? Maya's stomach was doing backflips. She stood by the edge of the water in her new orange bikini — the one she'd spent thirty bucks she didn't really have on — feeling completely out of place. Everyone else seemed to know exactly how to exist in this space, how to be cool without trying.

Across the pool, Jordan was in the middle of some story about his baseball team's undefeated season, gesturing with those hands that Maya had definitely noticed during third period English. His friends were cracking up, because of course they were. Jordan was the kind of guy who made everything look easy, even cannonballing into the deep end like a total goofball but still managing to seem smooth somehow.

"Hey!" someone shouted, and suddenly a cat that Maya hadn't even noticed was stalking around the patio furniture got spooked and went sprinting toward the pool — straight toward Maya's legs.

She shrieked and practically jumped backward into the water, which was exactly the kind of graceful moment she'd been trying to avoid all afternoon. When she surfaced, sputtering and wiping chlorine from her eyes, the absolute worst thing had happened. Everyone was looking. But Jordan wasn't laughing.

He was just... watching her with this expression she couldn't read.

"You okay?" he called from the other side of the pool.

"Yeah," Maya managed, though her face was burning hotter than the July sun. "Just. You know. Living my best life over here."

Something about the way she said it made Jordan grin. Not like he was making fun of her, but like she'd just said something he actually found funny. He started swimming toward her, cutting through the water with easy strokes.

"That cat," he said, reaching the side where she was clinging to the edge. "That's Mr. Whiskers. He's a total menance. Last week? Knocked an entire pizza off the counter."

"Mr. Whiskers? Really?"

"I didn't name him," Jordan said, splashing a little water her way. "I'm not saying it's a good name. I'm just saying the cat has issues."

Maya laughed before she could stop herself, and just like that, the weird knot in her chest loosened. Maybe pool parties didn't have to be these terrifying social minefields she'd built them up to be. Maybe they could just be... water and people and some awkward moments that turned into something real.

"You play baseball?" she asked, even though she definitely already knew the answer.

Jordan's whole face lit up. "You coming to our game next Friday?"

She hadn't planned on it. But honestly? She might actually go.
