Chlorine Dreams

Maya's legs burned as she rounded the third lap, the track blurring beneath her sneakers like a bad dream she couldn't wake up from. Coach Miller's voice echoed across the field: "Push through, Chen! State qualifiers are next week!" But Maya wasn't thinking about qualifiers. She was thinking about how she'd rather be literally anywhere else, preferably somewhere with zero expectations and maximum snacks.

Her parents' health cafe, The Green Goddess, was her actual personal hell. Every afternoon after practice, she'd spend two hours blending spinach smoothies for yoga moms who spent more time photographing their drinks than actually drinking them. "It's loaded with iron!" her mom would chirp, while Maya died inside a little more with each emerald-green pour.

"You're running yourself into the ground, chica," her best friend Leo had said yesterday, watching her down her third espresso. But Maya couldn't stop. If she stopped running, she'd have to think about how much she hated the完美的 life everyone thought she had—the perfect grades, the perfect athletic career, the perfect future pre-med student who'd make her parents so proud.

She got home that Friday to find her pet goldfish, named Chad (because he was基本且 problematic), floating sideways in his bowl. Maya burst into tears, and not just because Chad had survived her terrible fish-keeping skills for three whole years. It was everything—the pressure, the exhaustion, the way her life felt like one long race she hadn't signed up for.

Her little sister, Katie, found her sobbing in front of the depressed fish bowl. "Maya? You okay?"

"No," Maya laughed through tears. "But I think I'm done running from everything."

Katie, wise beyond her eleven years, shrugged. "Then walk. Walking's chill."

The next morning, Maya told Coach Miller she was taking a break. She told her parents she wasn't doing pre-med. And she Chad—still inexplicably alive—that she was finally going to figure out who Maya actually was, beyond the running, beyond the spinach smoothies, beyond everyone else's expectations.

Chad did a little swim-by in response. It was exactly the validation she needed.
