Chlorine Dreams

The water sparkled like shattered diamonds across the surface of the pool, but Maya's stomach was doing backflips. First day as junior lifeguard, and she'd already managed to drip strawberry protein smoothie all over her pristine red swimsuit.

"You good, Maya?" called Jordan, the senior lifeguard who looked like he'd stepped out of a TikTok thirst trap. Maya's brain short-circuited.

"So good," she squeaked. "Living my best life."

Her golden retriever, Buster, would've detected the lie immediately. But Jordan just nodded and returned to his chair, earbuds in, completely unaware that Maya's entire existence was currently spiraling.

The real problem wasn't the smoothie disaster. It was the cat.

Specifically, the ancient, perpetually annoyed Siamese that lived in the pool house and served as the facility's unofficial mascot. Mr. Whiskers had taken one look at Maya during orientation and hissed like she'd personally offended his entire lineage.

Now, as the first wave of summer camp kids splashed into the water, Maya's whistle felt like it weighed five pounds. The vitamin supplements her mom had started forcing on her for "energy and focus" were definitely not working. If anything, they were making her more hyperaware of every awkward moment.

"Watch THIS!" some seventh-grade boy shouted, attempting a cannonball that mostly resembled a confused dolphin.

Maya blew her whistle. "Walk, please!"

The boy's face fell. "Sorry, lifeguard."

Something shifted in that moment. The kids weren't judging her smoothie catastrophe or her cat-related failures. They were just... kids. Being kids. And Maya was responsible for them.

She caught Jordan's eye across the pool. He gave her a subtle thumbs-up.

Maybe she'd survive this summer after all.
