Chlorine & Courage

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her orange soda like a lifeline. The end-of-summer party raged around her—laughing sophomores, blasting music, and somewhere, Jake from her English class, looking annoyingly perfect in his swim trunks.

She'd spent forty-five minutes perfecting that casually effortless look, and now she couldn't even get wet. Because she'd forgotten something crucial: she couldn't actually swim. Not really. Not the way everyone else seemed to glide effortlessly through the water while she'd be doing her panicked dog paddle.

"Yo, Maya!" Jake called, splashing water toward her. "Coming in?"

Her neighbor's golden retriever, Buster, chose that exact moment to go full zoomie—running circles around the pool, barking at absolutely nothing, before skidding on a wet patch and tumbling straight into the water with a spectacular splash.

Chaos erupted. Everyone cracked up. Someone's orange floatie flipped. And in that moment of universal laughter, Maya realized nobody was watching her. Nobody was judging.

So she jumped.

The water shocked her system—cool and shocking and absolutely alive. She came up sputtering while Jake swam over, grinning. "About time."

"Shut up," she said, but she was smiling.

Buster shook himself off like a wet, orange disaster, spraying everyone. Maya floated on her back, watching the sky turn that perfect summer twilight color, and thought maybe next time she wouldn't wait for the dog to take the plunge first.

Maybe she'd just dive in.
