Chlorine & Courage
Maya stared at her reflection, fingers tangling in the cascade of coils she'd spent two hours perfecting. The invite said "pool party," but nobody mentioned that was code for "destroy your hair."
"You coming?" Jordan leaned against the doorframe, already shirtless, chlorine practically radiating off him.
Maya's heart did that stupid flutter thing. "I don't have a swim cap."
Jordan shrugged, all casual confidence. "So? Nobody cares."
Easy for him to say. His hair was a simple fade.
Outside, the pool glittered like something from a music video. Laughter rippled across the water, and suddenly Maya's throat felt tight. She'd been hiding her natural texture for months, straightening it into something manageable, something acceptable.
But the humidity was already plotting against her. Swimming would destroy everything.
"Maya!" Brianna waved from the deep end. "Get in here!"
Jordan jumped, cannonballing into the blue. Water sprayed everywhere. He surfaced, pushing dripping hair from his face, grinning like he didn't have a care in the world.
Maya's fingers found her phone. Open: cancel message.
Then she stopped.
Since when was she the girl who chose safety over living?
She kicked off her slides.
The first shock of cold hit her like electricity. She surfaced sputtering, water streaming down her face, her hair already surrendering to gravity and chlorine. Someone shrieked with laughter—probably at her explosion of a dive.
But then Jordan swam over, splashing water her way.
"Finally," he said, and something about the way he smiled made her stomach do that flutter thing again.
Maya ducked under, letting the silence embrace her. When she broke the surface, pushing her heavy, waterlogged hair from her face, Brianna was already splashing toward her, Jordan laughing at something hilarious.
And Maya laughed too, loud and genuine.
Her hair was ruined. Her makeup was gone. But somehow, she'd never felt more herself.
