Chlorine Courage
Maya clutched her dad's fishing hat like a life raft, the brim pulled low enough to hide her eyes but not her insecurity. The first pool party of freshman summer, and she was already regretting showing up.
That's when she saw him—the absolute BULL of sophomore year, Tyler, doing cannonballs off the diving board while everyone cheered. Tyler, who'd bumped into her in the hallway three times this week and never once said sorry. Tyler, whose Instagram stories made Maya feel like she was watching from behind glass, a total SPY in her own high school.
Then it happened. Tyler's hat—a backwards cap that definitely violated every dress code—flew off his head and landed right at Maya's feet.
She froze. The universe was pranking her.
"Yo, you gonna grab that?" someone yelled.
Before she could think, Maya snatched the hat and marched toward the pool. Every step felt like SWIMMING upstream against a current of judgment. But she kept going, clutching Tyler's sweaty cap like it was nuclear waste.
"Here," she said, thrusting it at him.
Tyler blinked water from his eyes. "Oh, uh, thanks. You're Marcus's little sister, right? The VITAMIN water girl?"
Maya's face burned. She DID bring her own vitamin-enhanced water to school every day, but how did he know that?
"It's called being prepared," she shot back, surprised by her own voice.
Tyler laughed. "No shade intended. That's actually kind of smart. I'm always crashing by seventh period."
He pulled the hat onto his wet hair. "I'm Tyler, by the way. Since apparently we've been hallway collision buddies all year."
"Maya," she said, and something in her chest unlocked.
By the time she left that party, Maya wasn't hiding under her dad's hat anymore. She was laughing at Tyler's terrible jokes, sitting in a circle with people she'd spent all year watching from afar. Still nervous, still overthinking everything.
But maybe that was okay. Maybe growing up wasn't about becoming fearless. Maybe it was about cannonballing in anyway.
